- Legendary Head Coach of the University of North Carolina Basketball Team from 1961 until 1997. A native of Emporia, Kansas and graduate of the University of Kansas, Smith's father was a high school basketball coach who led his team to the state title. While a student at Kansas, Dean Smith played on the varsity basketball team which won the national championship in 1952. As Head Coach at UNC, he led the Tarheels to two national championships, 11 Final Fours, and 17 ACC titles.
