Controlling the competition in a young loblolly pine stand resulted in a 2.2-foot (0.7 m) height advantage and an increase of 0.8 inches (2 cm) in DBH five years after planting. Survival of the cultivated trees was lower but the volume per acre was 54% higher than that of the uncultivated trees.
