William Friday discusses the challenges of campus unity amongst schools in land grant colleges and recalls developing NC State's spirit of unity in the late 1930s and early 1940s.

We were trying very hard to create a unity of spirit idea.

Too many land grant colleges are collections of schools and they don't think of a woven together fabric.

Well we had people from each of those areas and we all decided well no, the golden fleece was going to be the mechanism to do this and we wanted to speak with one voice, showing one strength, and we tried to build a spirit of unity in all that we did, and I think we were pretty successful at it.
