Students at North Carolina State were violently opposed to becoming the University of North Carolina at Raleigh.

We felt like we were a different campus. Although we were part of the university system we preferred a unique name.

We came to North Carolina State and we wanted it to stay that way. It was a compromise, which finally became North Carolina [State] University,

and they've dropped it now but at that time it said "at Raleigh."
