- Biographical Note:
- Dr. William W. (Bill) Austin received his B.S. in chemistry from Birmingham Southern College and his MS and Ph.D. in chemistry-metallurgy from Vanderbilt University. He joined NC State's Metallurgical Engineering Department as an Associate Professor in 1952. Austin later became a Full Professor and Head of the Department of Materials Engineering before retiring from NC State in 1978. Professionally, Austin consulted within the metallurgical field and helped in the restoration of the Hatteras Lighthouse. In 1981 he received the Outstanding Teacher's Award from NC State's School of Engineering.
