- Ralph Michael "Mike" Caldwell, of Tarboro, North Carolina, was a pitcher for North Carolina State University from 1968-1971. In 1978 he was drafted by the San Diego Padres, making his debut September 4, 1971. His career as a pitcher lasted until 1985 and included spots on the Padres, the San Francisco Giants, the Cincinnati Reds, and the Milwaukee Brewers.
