Summer 2025 closure

The D. H. Hill Jr. Library will be closed beginning on Monday, May 5, 2025, for planned electrical work. The Special Collections Research Center is located in Hill Library, and will be closed for all appointments during this period. Special Collections can only make appointment requests until April 25th and after August 3, 2025. During the closure, Special Collections staff will be available to answer questions about our collections, if they are accessible, and to support researchers using digital materials for their research. Some materials will not be available for reproduction requests. Please contact us!

Friday, William C. (William Clyde)

Biographical Note:
William C. Friday served as the assistant dean of students at UNC from 1948 until 1951 and as assistant to University President Gordon Gray in beginning in 1951. In 1956, Bill Friday served as acting President Emeritus of the Consolidated University system, a position which became permanent the same year. Friday maintained his presidency until his retirement in 1986. Born in Raphine, Virginia in 1920, but raised in Dallas, NC, Friday attended North Carolina State University, where he served as senior class president (1941). He earned a J.D. from the UNC School of Law in 1948. Friday served as the head of the University of North Carolina system from 1956 to 1986. William Friday died on October 12, 2012. Both NC State and UNC-Chapel Hill, have educational centers named in honor of Bill and his wife, Ida.
