Daniels, Josephus, 1862-1948

Biographical Note:
Josephus Daniels served as editor and owner of the Raleigh News and Observer from 1894 until his death in 1948. He was a member of the Watauga Club that helped found North Carolina State University and was an active participant in almost all public University functions held during his lifetime. Daniels also served as Secretary of the Navy in the Wilson Administration during World War I and as ambassador to Mexico during Franklin Roosevelt's Administration. Daniels had strong ties to white supremacy and played a leading role in the 1898 Wilmington coup, also known as the Wilmington massacre.
