Witherspoon, A. M. (Augustus McIver)

Biographical Note:
Augustus McIver Witherspoon received his Ph.D. in Botany from NCSU in 1971, only the second African American to do so at State. He joined the faculty in 1970 as Instructor of Botany and eventually held all of the following posts at NCSU: Full Professor, Assistant Dean, Acting Dean and Associate Dean of the Graduate School, Associate Provost and Coordinator of African-American Affairs (first to hold the position in 1989). Witherspoon retired from the University shortly before his death in 1994. The building formerly known as the Student Center Annex was dedicated in 1995 to honor him, renamed the Witherspoon Student Center.
