Biographical Note:
Colonel Schlitzkus, "had a distinguished flying career and received the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters, Commendation Medal and the Purple Heart. During his World War II service, his plane was shot down once and he ditched another plane in the Mediterranean Sea. He was captured and held prisoner of war for almost two years. His most interesting military experiences include being the pilot for General Mark Clark to the Casablanca Conference in 1943 with Churchill, Roosevelt and Stalin. He was the Commander of the Air Element for aerial photography during the atomic tests on Eniwetok, South Pacific in 1954. He was an Air Force Representative at the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan, and was the Commander of the Air Force ROTC at NC State University from 1965-1969 when he retired from military service. Upon his retirement from the Air Force, Sam was Director of Auxiliary Services at NC State University until 1982."--The News & Observer
