Summer 2025 closure

The D. H. Hill Jr. Library will be closed beginning on Monday, May 5, 2025, for planned electrical work. The Special Collections Research Center is located in Hill Library, and will be closed for all appointments during this period. Special Collections can only make appointment requests until April 25th and after August 3, 2025. During the closure, Special Collections staff will be available to answer questions about our collections, if they are accessible, and to support researchers using digital materials for their research. Phillips, J. A. (Joseph A.)

Biographical Note:
Extension Professor of Soil Science in 1968 and then Assistant Director of North Carolina Extension Service into 1989. He received a USDA Superior Service Award for outstanding conservation work, the Meritorious Award, the Extension Leadership Award, Outstanding Teacher Award, and the Order of the Long Leaf Pine from Governor Jim Hunt. He was named a Fellow of the Soil Conservation Society in 1985 and was a Public Service Fellow of the Board of Governors of the University of North Carolina. He was one of the founders of the State of North Carolina Erosion and Sedimentation program. He was involved in the drafting of the Sedimentation Control Act of 1973 and was on the committee that wrote the state rules. He received his doctorate from Iowa State University.
