Hines, Thomas I., 1913-1999

Biographical Note:
Thomas Ira Hines, of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, played baseball for North Carolina State University in the mid-1930s, while earning his B.S. in Mathematics and Physical Education. He received his M.S. in Physical Education from the University of North Carolina and in 1942, became a Professor of Physical Education, coaching swimming for one year and track for three. Appointed as Head of Department of Recreation Resources Administration from 1947-1978. He was named a Fellow of the American Recreation Society in 1964, which, at the time, was the highest honor available in the United States to people in parks and recreation. He was made a director of the Society of the Park and Recreation Education in 1966. He was named as one North Carolina State University’s Outstanding Teachers in 1969. He received an Outstanding Service Award from the American Association of Zoological Parks and Aquariums (A.A.Z.P.A.) in 1976.
