Hartley, Lodwick, 1906-1979

Biographical Note:
Hartley received his Ph.D. from Princeton University. In 1929 he served as Instructor and Assistant Professor in English, leaving to complete his Ph.D. Hartley was made Associate Professor in 1939 and Head of the English Department in 1940. He retired in 1971. Twice he received the Distinguished Teaching Award and he was also the author of over a dozen books. Hartley was a leader in the movement to create a liberal arts program which evolved into the School of Humanities and Social Sciences.
