Summer 2025 closure

The D. H. Hill Jr. Library will be closed beginning on Monday, May 5, 2025, for planned electrical work. The Special Collections Research Center is located in Hill Library, and will be closed for all appointments during this period. Special Collections can only make appointment requests until April 25th and after August 3, 2025. During the closure, Special Collections staff will be available to answer questions about our collections, if they are accessible, and to support researchers using digital materials for their research. Cowling, Ellis Brevier, 1932-

Biographical Note:
Ellis Cowling earned his B.A. and M.S. in forestry from Syracuse University and his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin in plant pathology and biochemistry. Cowling came to NCSU in 1965 as Professor in the School of Agriculture and School of Forest Resources. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences at the age of 40. Cowling has been elected to Sigma Xi, American Phytopathological Society, American Institute of Biological Sciences, Mycological Society of America, and Society of American Foresters. Cowling was also named a Fellow of the International Academy of Wood Science. In 1981 he received the O. Max Gardner Award in 1981. Cowling was the nation's leader in the study of acid rain. He is still a University Distinguished Professor at Large, College Of Natural Resources, Air Resources Research.
