Summer 2025 closure

The D. H. Hill Jr. Library will be closed beginning on Monday, May 5, 2025, for planned electrical work. The Special Collections Research Center is located in Hill Library, and will be closed for all appointments during this period. Special Collections can only make appointment requests until April 25th and after August 3, 2025. During the closure, Special Collections staff will be available to answer questions about our collections, if they are accessible, and to support researchers using digital materials for their research. Some materials will not be available for reproduction requests. Please contact us!

Colvard, Dean W., 1913-2007

Biographical Note:
Dean W. Colvard received his B.S. degree from Berea College, the M.A. from the University of Missouri, and his Ph.D. from Purdue University, which has also conferred upon him an honorary degree. His academic experience includes work at North Carolina State College where he was Professor and Head of the Department of Animal Science from 1948 to 1953 and Dean of Agriculture from 1953 to 1960. Dr. Colvard also served as Superintendent of North Carolina Agricultural Research Stations from 1938 to 1946. In 1960 he became President of Mississippi State University and became Chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in 1966. In 1954 The Progressive Farmer named him Man of the Year in North Carolina Agriculture. In 2005 Colvard and his wife established the Dr. Dean and Mrs. Martha Colvard 4-H Leadership Endowment to provide resources for youth leadership programs to ensure that 21st-century 4-H youth will have opportunities to develop values-based leadership skills.
