- Kevin Howell has had a long career in university administration in North Carolina. Howell is an alumnus of NC State University, earning a bachelor’s degree in political science in 1988. While a student, Howell was elected as NC State’s first African American student body president. After graduating, he earned a law degree from the University of North Carolina and began his career as a legal clerk at the North Carolina Court of Appeals. From 2006-2016 Howell was employed at NC State as assistant to the chancellor for external affairs. In 2018-2023 he served as the university’s vice chancellor for external affairs, partnerships and economic development. Howell then held the position of chief external affairs officer for UNC Health and the UNC School of Medicine before being appointed as NC State’s first African American Chancellor on May 5, 2025.
