- Biographical Note:
- Katherine Stinson was born in Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina on September 18, 1917. She was the first woman to enter NC State's School of Engineering, enrolling in 1937 and earning a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Aeronautical Option, in 1941. Upon graduation, Stinson became the first woman engineer hired by the Civil Aeronautics Administration (now the Federal Aviation Administration) in 1941. Stinson helped found the Society of Women Engineers in 1950 and was a lifelong advocate for women entering STEM fields.
