- Men and boy in front of stacks of fuelwood
- Description:
- Transcribed from accompanying envelope: Made by W. R. Mattoon, U. S. Forest Service; [October] 20, 1026; Fuel wood, Catawba [County]; Fuel wood removed in a thinning demonstration on the farm of Mr. R. D. Rufty, Catawba County, N. C. Demonstration area is in the right back-ground. Results of demonstration showed 11 cords of wood per acre removed, leaving 492 dominant trees per acre. In five years this area will give a crop of 100 to 125 merchantable trees, to be used as lumber or telephone poles, still leaving a fully stocked stand for future crops. Over-crowding causes a dwarfed and stunted growth.
