Summer 2025 closure

The D. H. Hill Jr. Library will be closed beginning on Monday, May 5, 2025, for planned electrical work. The Special Collections Research Center is located in Hill Library, and will be closed for all appointments during this period. Special Collections can only make appointment requests until April 25th and after August 3, 2025. During the closure, Special Collections staff will be available to answer questions about our collections, if they are accessible, and to support researchers using digital materials for their research. Transcribed from enclosed press release: For Immediate Release; FAISON MAN RECOGNIZED--Addis Cates (left) of Faison, whose name is synonymous with pickles, now has a cucumber variety named after him. The new Addis variety of pickling cucumber was developed by the North Carolina Agricultural Experiment Station. Station Director J. C. Williamson Jr. (center) announced the new variety, which was developed by Dr. Richard Lower (right). The Cates family has been in the pickle business since 1898, and they organized the Charles F. Cates & Sons Pickle Company at Faison in 1929. Two other new pickling cucumber varieties developed by the N. C. Agricultural Experiment Station have been named Sampson and Calypso. (N. C.
