- Transcribed from enclosed press release: For Immediate Release; FAISON MAN RECOGNIZED--Addis Cates (left) of Faison, whose name is synonymous with pickles, now has a cucumber variety named after him. The new Addis variety of pickling cucumber was developed by the North Carolina Agricultural Experiment Station. Station Director J. C. Williamson Jr. (center) announced the new variety, which was developed by Dr. Richard Lower (right). The Cates family has been in the pickle business since 1898, and they organized the Charles F. Cates & Sons Pickle Company at Faison in 1929. Two other new pickling cucumber varieties developed by the N. C. Agricultural Experiment Station have been named Sampson and Calypso. (N. C.
