- Tar Heel 4-H'ers Win Nationals A delegation of 39 North Carolina 4-H Club members--the largest Tar Heel group ever to attend--won eight national awards and three sectional prizes at the National 4-H Club Congress in Chicago. Seven members won educational scholarships valued at $500 each and one member won a $1,000 scholarship. Sheila Blanton, Jackson County, won the $1,000 grant for her achievements in the safety program. Other winners were Linda Rumbley, Alamance, bread and cereal; Kenneth Clapp Guilford, health; Jack Nesbitt, Henderson, agriculture; Mary Lois Cooke, Iredell, horticulture; Gail King, Johnston, food preservation; Steve Szczerbiak, New Hanover, tractor; and Ray Ritchie, Wake, electric. Sectional winners who received trips to Chicago were Phoebe Lee, Anson, dairy foods; Ralph Renegar, Iredell, forestry; and Bob Chandler, Pitt, photography.
