Description:
This is a panoramic photograph of some trees that have grown back fifteen years after being burned. Front: "Natural Reforestation Fifteen Years after Logging in the State of Washington, where Slash was Burned, and the new growth protected from fire thereafter. The first burning destroys the surface seed--and slash--only; the fireweed following protects the delicate growth from the deeper side, and is then killed out by the thrifty growth. Unless burned once, Hemlock may come in first and choke out the Fir, Cedar, and Spruce. A new stand of the more valuable varieties follows more quickly than when not burned once." Back: "Panoramas of Reforested tracts in two stages. (As these are made up from several views in different locations they cannot be given land locations, and while not strictly legitimate, I can assure you they are quite typical of the growth in many places where it is impossible to get such photographs. Note the Cedar at right of [...]"
