The D. H. Hill Jr. Library will be closed beginning on Monday, May 5, 2025, for planned electrical work. The Special Collections Research Center is located in Hill Library, and will be closed for all appointments during this period. Special Collections can only make appointment requests until April 25th and after August 3, 2025. During the closure, Special Collections staff will be available to answer questions about our collections, if they are accessible, and to support researchers using digital materials for their research. Provenance note:
The home was originally constructed by James Coor, a local house-builder and real estate speculator, to serve as his home. In the early twentieth century the house was acquired by Edward K. Bishop, a merchant and wholesale grocer.
Architectural note:
The house's original appearance was that of a Georgian Revival style residence, but the renovations of 1904 transformed the structure into an example of Simpson's characteristic Southern Colonial style, complete with columns and a full one-story porch.
Historical note:
The home played host to such prominent visitors as President James Monroe and John C. Calhoun.
