Title:
Will Grant Grocery Store Photograph, circa 1935
Description:
The Will Grant Grocery Store was located at 519 Oberlin Road in Historic Oberlin Village. Oberlin Village was founded by free Black residents and was a thriving African American community with over 1200 inhabitants. The growth of the community was curtailed by white neighborhoods moving into the surrounding area after Oberlin Village was annexed by the city of Raleigh in 1920. The widening of Wade Avenue in 1955 as well as the encroachment of the Village District (formerly Cameron Village) further displaced longtime residents, many of whom moved north.
