Description:

This recording was conducted as part of FLE 400: American English pronunciation for International Students with Professor Mary Michaels Estrada in October 2018, in the D.H. Hill Jr. Library. Both from China, but from different cities, Xiaowen Zhao and Yuewei Zhou interview each other about life in America and on campus at N.C. State. Zhou, who also attended high school in America, is currently studying Statistics, though she began as a Food Sciences major. She describes the development of her language skills since her first day of school, how she translated her homework and listened to students in class to grow her vocabulary, and the issues she sees other non-native speakers facing. Specifically, Zhou speaks to the struggles of test-taking, and frustration as an international student to study a subject and understand it, only to lose points on the exam because of the professor’s word choice. Zhao, currently a Nutrition major considering a switch to Accounting, testifies to this problem on exams, and admits that she still has trouble with lectures, and relies on translating her textbooks to teach her content. They discuss differences in academic environments and student life between China and the United States, with both noting that American students take a more independent approach to studying. They discuss their proudest moments on campus, such as receiving good grades for classes in which they worked very hard.
