Wolf Tales Recording with Runbing Zheng and Kaiying Chen: FLE400, 7 February 2019

Description:

This recording was conducted as part of FLE 400: American English pronunciation for International Students with Professor Mary Michaels Estrada in February 2019, in the D.H. Hill Library. Kaiying Chen and Runbing Zheng, from different cities in China, share their experiences coming to Raleigh and studying at N.C. State as international students. A Ph.D. candidate in Entomology, Chen has struggled with the language barrier, as well as the shift from her master’s work in Pesticide Sciences to her doctoral field, but is hoping to enrich her understanding of bugs and pests to inform her development of pesticides. Chen says she hopes to become a professor, and since her education is funded through the Chinese government, she is required to return to China after her studies. Zheng is a graduate student in Statistics and wants to pursue a career in the field at companies similar to the SAS Institute. Beyond general difficulties with the language, Zheng describes having a hard time understanding American cultural habits, like asking questions like “How are you?” or “What’s up?” as a greeting.
