Wolf Tales recording with Matthew Wright, 8 September 2016: African American Cultural Center's Harambee 2016, 8 September 2016
Description:
This recording was conducted in the Talley Student Union on the campus of North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina, at the NCSU African American Cultural Center’s 2016 Harambee event. In the recording, Matthew Wright (‘18) discusses: discovering the African American Cultural Center (AACC) through the African American Symposium as a freshman; being identified as a dancer for the first time by a new friend in the AACC; AACC Program Coordinator Toni Harris Thorpe (known as “Mama Thorpe”); the importance of creating and finding a safe space on campus; finding community, support, and motivation as an underrepresented minority on a predominantly white campus; the African proverb “Until the lion has his own historian, the tale of the hunt will always glorify the hunter;” and the importance of representing diverse voices and telling one’s own story.
