This recording was conducted in the D. H. Hill Jr. Library on the campus of North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina. Renee Wells discusses her experience as the Director of the GLBT Center from August 2014 to July 2018. Wells discusses the role of the GLBT Center, and how the focus of the Center has expanded and deepened under her leadership; including an early revamping of Project SAFE and Trans 101 training curricula. Wells discusses other substantial changes, including re-writing the mission statement; implementing assessment measures; and developing the Volunteer Intern Program and Advocate Program. Other major changes include expanding GLBT groups on campus, the preferred name system within University Records, mapping of campus single-occupancy gender-inclusive restrooms, efforts to address concerns with University Housing, and to generally encourage critical thinking around campus policies and practices. Wells also reflects on her upcoming departure from her role at NC State, and the pride and affection she has for her team, Preston Keith, Andy DeRoin, and Lynn Locklear-Fisher. Lastly, Wells considers the nature of advocating for institutional change, and the difficulties of a campus that she feels is not yet ready to embrace transformative change.
