Description:

This recording was conducted as part of FLE 400: American English pronunciation for International Students with Professor Mary Michaels Estrada in October 2018, in the D.H. Hill Jr. Library. Syamsudin “Sam” Slamet, from Bogor, Indonesia, and Guan Wang, from Xinjiang, China, sit down to discuss the greatest cultural differences they’ve observed since moving to the United States. Syamsudin, a masters student studying Forestry, cites the rigor of classes and workload at N.C. State as being the greatest adaptation he has had to make as a student, and his advice for new international students is to work hard. Guan, an undergraduate studying Business Administration, discusses perceptions of Americans in China, the things that he has found most surprising about American culture, and what he misses most about life in China. Both reflect on growing up in their hometowns, and the beauty in their respective countries.
