This recording was conducted in the African American Cultural Center Gallery in the Witherspoon Student Center on the campus of North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina, at the opening reception of the "Politics of Black Hair" exhibit, curated by Angela Gay of the NCSU Women’s Center. Aalanah Valentine discusses her experience embracing her natural African American hair as a teenager, challenges of having natural Black hair at a predominantly white institution, and the importance of personal choice and expression through hair.
