Description:
This recording was conducted in the StateView Hotel on Centennial Campus of North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina, at the Caldwell Fellows 50th Anniversary Gala. Alice Caldwell Steele, Andy Caldwell, Helen Caldwell, and Charles Caldwell discuss their early lives in Arkansas, where their father John T. Caldwell was the President of the University of Arkansas. The Caldwell family share memories of their parents, the early loss of their mother, and connections they shared with their family cook. They also share anecdotes of their father’s life, including a summer job working for the Coca-Cola plant in Mississippi, and his world travels, daily routine, and values. The Caldwells then share instances where their father responded to incidents in his capacity as Chancellor of NC State, including arson, the 1963 Speaker Ban, and student protests and sit-ins; and reflect on issues that students engage with in the present day. Memories of Chancellor Caldwell that his family would like people to know are freely shared, illustrating his generosity, curiosity, and some charming quirks. Lastly, the Caldwell children reflect on their pride in the Caldwell Fellows program; the friendships they have made with Fellows, and express their thanks for all those who participate in the program.
