This recording was conducted in the Talley Student Union on the campus of North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina, at the 2018 Sisterhood Day program. Hatice Orun Ozturk discusses her experience as a Teaching Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering and her pivotal role in the formation of the program as a joint department between NC State and UNC Chapel Hill. Ozturk shares her trajectory within NC State, beginning in 1983 when she was a PhD student in electrical engineering; and reflects on finding her place in an agriculture school. While a PhD student, Ozturk collaborated with founding members of the women’s and gender studies programs to create a course on women in STEM and highlight women in science. Ozturk reflects on the committee and other work she took on as a non-tenured faculty member; taking on accreditation duties in the Biomedical Engineering department in 2004; and the growth of the joint program between NC State and UNC Chapel Hill.
