Title:
Wolf Tales Recording with Josefiina Jara: FLE400, 23 October 2018
Description:
This recording was conducted as part of FLE 400: American English pronunciation for International Students with Professor Mary Michaels Estrada in October 2018, in the D.H. Hill Jr. Library. Josefiina Jara is a senior exchange student from Finland, studying Paper Science and Engineering at NCSU. Being from northern Europe, Jara cites the weather in Raleigh as being one of the surprises about coming to America for the first time, but adjusting expectations is something that she has understood as an international student. She describes challenges in the use of a second language, navigating a new academic environment with different expectations, and becoming comfortable in her new home, but Jara finds pride in all she has learned and in getting out of her comfort zone. She recalls the scale of the school especially excited her, and the variety of active groups encouraged her to get involved on campus, like joining the Women’s Soccer Club. She underlines how important the open-mindedness of campus and Raleigh is to students who are new and don’t speak English as their first language, and how this aids an easier transition into American life for international students.
