Description:
This recording was conducted in the Talley Student Union on the campus of North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina, at the Wolf Tales Last Day of Classes (LDOC) 2017 Open Recording Day. In the recording, Justine Hollingshead, Chief of Staff for the Division of Academic and Student Affairs and NCSU GLBT Center Founding Director (2008-2014), discusses: coming to work in Student Housing at NC State in 1995; challenges in her first years at NC State, particularly as an openly gay woman; the evolution of the LGBT community on campus; developing the Project SAFE Ally Training program; the opening of the GLBT Center in the old Talley Student Union in 2008, and her role as founding director; community response to a graffiti hate bias incident targeting the GLBT Center; significant colleagues that have impacted her time at NC State, including Tim Blair, Tom Stafford, Chancellor Randy Woodson, Carrie Zelna, Joanne Woodard, Barry Olson, and Evelyn Reiman; marrying her wife at the Out Raleigh Festival in 2012; and her commitment to her work at NC State, including both the challenges and benefits of her role making a positive impact on NC State students. This recording was created with the support of funds made possible through a 2016-2017 Diversity Mini-Grant from the NCSU Office of Institutional Equity and Diversity (OIED).
