Description:
This recording was conducted in the Talley Student Union on the campus of North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina, at the 2017 Ebony Harlem Awards of Excellence Celebration, presented by the African American Cultural Center in conjunction with the Department of Multicultural Student Affairs. In the recording, Malik Hines (‘18) and Malik Zeigler (‘18) discuss: what the Ebony Harlem Awards mean to them; the importance of celebrating the achievements of African American students; supporting the Society of African American Culture (SAAC), and Zeigler’s role as president of the organization; SAAC receiving second place for the organization of the year award category; other award categories of interest; people who impacted their time as students, including friends, Tracey Ray, Jasmine Cannon, and Leah Young; Hines’s acceptance as a Symposium Leader for the Multicultural Student Affairs Symposium for incoming students; desire to see the racial climate improve at NC State; campus dining options; NC State’s focus on innovation; desire to see more transparency from the administration regarding hate bias incidents; desire to see a more progressive, liberal culture on campus; and favorite professors including Darrell Stover, Jesse Crane-Seeber, and Michael Cobb. This recording was created with the support of funds made possible through a 2016-2017 Diversity Mini-Grant from the NCSU Office of Institutional Equity and Diversity (OIED).
