This recording was conducted in the Talley Student Union on the campus of North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina, at the NCSU GLBT Center’s 2017 Lavender Graduation. In the recording, J Hallen (‘18) and Michael (Mika) Murphy (‘19) discuss: how they identify and describe themselves; discovering the GLBT community at NC State through the GLBT Symposium and Open Houses when it was located at Harrelson Hall; the GLBT Center’s impact on their time as students; Hallen’s work to build Students Advocating for Gender Equality (SAGE) on campus; taking pride in personal and academic growth while at NC State; defining intersectionality and experiencing it at NC State; differentiating between gender identity and gender expression; and changes that they wish to see at NC State in the future, including more conversations across different communities, greater student participation in university administration and decision making, and greater equity and inclusion for transgender members of the community.
