In the recording, Carolei Bryan (‘17), Maya Mariable (‘15), and Jordan Shai Anderson (‘18) discuss: Anderson’s first time at the African American Cultural Center (AACC) after the African American Symposium, through a tour from fellow student Destinie Statum; former AACC Directors Dr. Sheila Smith-McKoy and Dr. Tracy Ray; AACC Program Coordinator Toni Harris Thorpe (known as “Mama Thorpe”); leadership as AYA Ambassadors; the AACC as a second home; Bryan discovering the AACC through Peace Church in the Witherspoon Center; finding community and support as underrepresented minorities on campus and in STEM fields especially; Mariable also discovering the AACC through the African American Symposium; the African proverbs “Until the lion has his own historian, the tale of the hunt will always glorify the hunter,” “You learn more when you lose than when you win,” and “It takes a village to raise a child;” and recalling meeting each other at different points in their time at NC State, through the AACC and Peace Church.
