- Title:
- Effects of Lime, Phosphorus, and Aluminum on Loblolly Pine Seedlings Grown in Potted Peidmont Soils, 1972 (Charlottesville Research Center Research Report No. 47)
- Description:
- Loblolly pine seedlings were grown in the greenhouse on two acid, fine textured piedmont soils, and were treated with levels of agricultural lime, phosphate, and aluminum salt in a complete factorial design. Aluminum was applied to study problems related to aluminum toxicity. Moderate rates of lime, at 1 and 2 tons/acre, stimulated seedling growth. Applied phosphate, at 100 and 400 lbs. P/acre, had a strong growth stimulating effect. Aluminum enrichment of the soils reduced seedling growth. Liming tended to offset the growth stimulating effect of phosphorus fertilization, confirming the results of previous greenhouse work. Liming soils for pines is not an accepted silvicultural practice in the United States while it is done in Europe, and it is therefore recommended that the findings of this report should be confirmed by field plot studies before introducing them into practice.
