Title:
Phosphorus Placement Underground Near the Pine Root System -- Second Year Results (Charlottesville Research Center, Research Report No. 42)
Description:
Application of 3 and 6 ounces triple superphosphate per seedling 3 inches from the stem and 5 inches deep at time of planting resulted in a positive growth response between the first and second growing seasons. Graded Nos. 1 and 2 piedmont loblolly responded in average seedling volume +27.1% and +14.1% to 3- and 6-ounce rates respectively over no phosphorus. Ungraded open pollinated loblolly from the Virginia Division of Forestry piedmont orchard responded +8.2% and +12.3% in average volume to 3 and 6 ounces over the zero rate. Average height and increment was best for both sources of seedlings at 3 ounces. Survival was unaffected by phosphorus application. The most outstanding result was lack of fireweed stocking, which is usual with broadcast phosphorus disced into the soil creating adverse competition deterring loblolly growth. It is recommended that phosphorus placement be made below ground to properly stimulate the pine being fertilized and to avoid stimulating fireweed development on piedmont sites.
