Title:
Loblolly Response to Five Levels of Phosphorus Application Second Year Results, 1970 (Charlottesville Research Center Research Report No. 41)
Description:
On a hardwood conversion area five levels of elemental P, applied as triple superphosphate, were disced into a typical Piedmont Virginia soil at the rates of 0, 25, 50, 100, and 200 pounds P per acre. The P stimulated fireweed (Erechtites hieracifolia), a vigorous pine seedling competitor. A companion greenhouse study using soil from the study area once again favorably revealed the positive effect of P on the growth of loblolly pine in piedmont soil under greenhouse conditions. The study strongly suggests the need for field control of fireweed when fertilizing with phosphate.
