Summer 2025 closure

The D. H. Hill Jr. Library will be closed beginning on Monday, May 5, 2025, for planned electrical work. The Special Collections Research Center is located in Hill Library, and will be closed for all appointments during this period. Special Collections can only make appointment requests until April 25th and after August 3, 2025. During the closure, Special Collections staff will be available to answer questions about our collections, if they are accessible, and to support researchers using digital materials for their research. Title:
Ten Year Results of Phosphorus, Lime, and Nitrogen Applications to a 10-Year Old Loblolly Plantation in Virginia Peidmont, 1969 (Charlottesville Research Center Research Report No. 37)
Description:
A phosphate treated loblolly plantation growing on a hardwood conversion area shows no significant response to several treatments after 10 years. The typical Piedmont Virginia site was surface broadcast with 66 pounds of P per acre (833 pounds of super-phosphate), 2 tons of ground limestone per acre, and 66 and 264 pounds of P as rock phosphate (500 and 2,000 pounds per acre) in 1959. Loblolly pine were planted immediately after fertilizer application. In 1963 50 pounds of N as ammonium nitrate was applied to selected plots. All fertilizer applications were made singly and in combination and replicated four times. Ten growing seasons later total cubic-foot volume production was essentially the same for all treatments. Foliar analysis of the 10-year old trees shows a higher percent P in the tissue from the P fertilized trees than from the nonfertilized trees. The trees on the zero P plots averaged 0.107% P in the foliage and the treated P plots averaged 0.130% P in the foliage. Soil analysis revealed that the surface broadcast P had not moved after 10 years—it is still primarily in the 0- to 2-inch layer. Soil sampling the 0- to 8-inch layer did not detect the heavy concentration of P in the surface layer too well because of the volume dilution effect.
