Title:
Assessment of Fertilizer Needs in Loblolly Pine Plantations in the Virginia Piedmont, 1969 (Charlottesville Research Center Research Report No. 36)
Description:
An exploratory study was established in cooperation with Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1967 to determine if loblolly pine in Piedmont Virginia would respond to fertilizer. Twenty-one loblolly plantations ranging in age from 0 to 8 years located from central Virginia to the North Carolina line were surface broadcast with a mixed fertilizer (10-10-10) at the rate of 800 pounds per acre for trees 4 years up, and at 4 ounces per seedling for trees under 4 years. After two growing seasons oven dry wood weight data indicate that 17 of the 21 plantations fertilized responded favorably. An increase in wood weight in excess of 5% was found in 45% of the plantations treated. Maximum growth response (63%) was on a freshly disked hardwood conversion area recently planted. A 25% wood weight increase was also measured in the oldest plantations treated, which were 8 years old and located on an old field. Growth response in excess of 5% was measured in plantations equally divided between old field and hardwood conversion areas.
