Title:
Third Year Results form the Fertilization of 20-Year Age Class Loblolly Pine Plantations Study on the Parkersburg District of West Virginia Woodlands (Information Sheet No. WV-41)
Description:
One of the functions on land management on the Parkersburg District of West Virginia Woodlands is to supply pine fiber to the Luke, Maryland mill. The conversion of low-quality hardwood stands and old fields to pine plantations has been an ongoing program aimed at increasing the pine growing stock. Virginia pine is the most common native conifer, but white, pitch and shortleaf pines are also present. In addition, loblolly pine has been planted experimentally in the area since the late 1950’s. Until recently, Virginia pine has been the major species planted. The growth of loblolly in the early tests has been encouraging enough that current planting involves about equal proportions of Virginia and loblolly pine. Management is presently considering increasing the use of loblolly pine in the plantation program. Fertilization has become an integral part of loblolly plantation management on other Company woodlands, but the effects of loblolly fertilization on this District are unknown. This study was designed to determine the effects of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) fertilization on 20-year-age class loblolly pine plantations on the Parkersburg District.
