- Title:
- North Carolina State Forest Fertilization Cooperative -- Regionwide 9 1979 Thinning x Fertilizer Study -- 2 Year Results (Research Information Sheet No. SC-15)
- Description:
- Thinning and fertilization studies installed by the North Carolina State Forest Fertilization Cooperative (NCSFFC) showed that nitrogen (N) increased growth of loblolly pine in thinned and unthinned stands. Thinning generally reduced total loblolly pine yield over the rotation because growing stock was reduced. Although results were inconsistent, the NCSFFC reported after four years that net volume production (because of less mortality) was greater on thinned and fertilized plots than on unthinned plots. Over time the higher net productivity could result in thinned and fertilized stands having a total yield equal to the unthinned stands with the increased volume being put on fewer, larger stems.
