Title:
Phosphorus Fixation I. Laboratory Work (Information Sheet No. FSL-6)
Description:
Values obtained for available phosphorus in soil by the double acid extraction method are correlated with plant growth and are used when making soil fertility management decisions for poorly drained sandy loam soils. This correlation does not apply to sites with clayey soils. These sites yield low values for available phosphorus but still do not respond to applied fertilizers because the clays “fix” (tie up) the P, making it unavailable to plants. This study investigates the binding of applied phosphorus by soils, in order to enable one to identify which sites should be classified as phosphorus-fixing and to determine how they should be managed.
