- Title:
- Below Ground Application of a Complete Fertilizer at Time of Planting Eighth Year Results -- Final Report (Information Sheet No. CH-12)
- Description:
- Greenhouse studies have indicated that the clay soils of the piedmont will tie up more phosphorus than sandy soils, so it was hypothesized that more phosphorus fertilizer needs to be applied in clay soil to obtain a growth response in loblolly pine. Ten years after a broadcast application of P on clay soil to obtain a growth response in loblolly pine. Ten years after a broadcast application of P on clay soil investigation showed the phosphorus to be located in the 0- to 2-inch layer of topsoil. Fertilizer packets containing 16-8-16 (N-P-K) analysis stimulated pine growth after two years when placed two to four inches from seedling root systems. Survival and weed growth were not affected. It was suggested that P be applied below ground to become more readily available to pine root systems.
