Title:
NXP Factorial in Subsoil Slits at Time of Planting Loblolly Pine on Hardwood Conversion Land in the Virginia Piedmont, 1979 (Information Sheet No. CH-07)
Description:
Previous studies conducted in the Virginia Piedmont by Westvaco have shown that the application of a complete fertilizer (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium) (NPK) at time of planting significantly increased loblolly pine growth over a 5-year period. Eight years after planting, loblolly pine has shown no significant growth response to five phosphatic fertilizers applied with the Westvaco fertilizer applicator at rates of 25 and 50 lbs. elemental P per acre on a loam soil. The application of four rates of N did not stimulate growth of loblolly pine after 3-years. The treatment N150-P50 (150 lbs. N/acre plus 50 lbs. P/acre) did stimulate growth over all of the N-alone treatments but was not significantly better than the control. All the fertilizer was applied below ground with the Westvaco applicator which meters any desired amount of fertilizer in a subsoil slit at a depth of 9 to 10 inches. The fertilizer applicator is used to limit the stimulation of competing vegetation that accompanies broadcast application of fertilizer at time of planting.
