- Title:
- Response of 10-Year Old Slash Pine to Nitrogen and Phosphorus Fertilizers (Research Report No. 153)
- Description:
- A 10-year old slash pine plantation which had grown about 1-foot per year in height on a Bayboro loam savannah responded with increased growth to application of phosphorus fertilizer. Cubic foot volume increased by 43 percent after 3 years. Pre-treatment soil analysis indicated P-deficiency. Post-treatment soil and foliar analyses show P increases in proportion to the increased growth of treated trees. Foliar P levels are below the adequacy threshold even on treated plots, suggesting increased response to higher application rates might be expected. The N:P ratios distinguished between good response and no response. Foliar levels of N, P, and K were low, even on fertilized plots. Nitrogen applied alone depressed growth, but in combination with P it added slightly to growth. Responses of the magnitude measured are economically favorable.
