- Title:
- Effects of Nitrogen on a Dense Natural 20-Year Old Loblolly Pine Stand After Two Years (Research Report No. 151)
- Description:
- Nitrogen applied at rates of 100, 200, 400, and 600 pounds per acre to a dense 20-year age class loblolly stand produced more basal area and more cubic foot volume than the check plots after 2-years. Reasonable economic assumptions applied to the cubic foot increase from Nitrogen show positive returns. Cubic foot increase was greatest by the dominant crown class trees, diminishing with the lower crown classes. Diameter growth by crown classes was definitely better for dominants, and became progressively lower for the lesser classes. Diameter increase of dominant trees was positively related to level of foliar N after treatment. By crown classes survival is very high for the better classes and falls off for the suppressed trees, reflecting normal stand development not strongly affected by the treatments. Attempts to correlate any growth parameters to percent total soil nitrogen were unsuccessful.
