- Title:
- Effects of Phosphorous Fertilization at Planting on Loblolly Pine Fine Root Biomass at Mid-Rotation (Forest Science Laboratory Productivity Group, Research Report No. 94)
- Description:
- A twenty-year-old loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) phosphorus fertilization trial was sampled to determine fine root (<l mm diameter) biomass and fine root length at 0-10 cm and 10-20 cm depths. While above-ground response to phosphorus fertilizer was substantial, below ground there were no significant differences between P-fertilized and unfertilized treatments. More fine roots were found in bedded microsites than in interbed rnicrosites, and more roots were present at 0-10 cm than at the 10-20 cm depth. The results of this study support the hypothesis that P-deficient trees have a higher proportion of their total biomass in fine roots than do trees with an adequate supply of phosphorus.
