Title:
A Survey of Site Quality, Yields, and Soils of Old Field Pine Plantations in the Piedmont and Sandhills of South Carolina (Winnsboro Research Center, Research Report No. 30)
Description:
A survey was conducted of thirteen old field pine plantations in the Piedmont and Sandhills of South Carolina to determine site index and plot volumes, and to collect soil samples for chemical analysis. Site quality was found to be somewhat higher on the old field sites than that generally experienced on non-old field sites. Plot volumes compared closely to the yields predicted for such stands by Coile and Schumacher. It was concluded from soil chemical analysis that residual fertilizer did not contribute to the enhanced growth of these old field sites. The complete control of competing vegetation of such areas is hypothesized to be primarily responsible for the improved growth. This knowledge contributes to the evaluation of potential gains in plantation productivity through intensive silvicultural practices.
